On the receipt of a major order for a coating machine we decided to use
a fully integrated Siemens solution for the drives and PLC. Due to the
size of the project we asked HMK and Siemens to recommend a
subcontractor to program the equipment. Both companies recommended Paul
Wearing at Sheer Systems Ltd.
The system consisted of fourteen compact plus drives on our machine and
four drives on another suppliers equipment, all connected via Profibus.
An S7 300 PLC with distributed I/O units was used as the control. In
addition to this there was a requirement for a complex HMI program with
data logging and integrated with another suppliers HMI program.
We supplied a functional design specification to Sheer Systems and they
did the rest. They immediately showed us that they had a complete
understanding of the machine requirements. They went on to assist us
with the control design so that when program met machine there where no
surprises.
On completion of the machine, Paul attended Doel Engineering Ltd to
commission the program and test the machine. When the machine was
finally installed in Ireland, he re-commissioned and tested the system
with the other suppliers equipment.
The customer had the software inspected by an independent programmer
who believed it to be one of the best they had encountered.

Paul’s technical ability on
project applications is excellent. His ability to design and construct
an electrical control system from the base upwards is a major asset to
his company, Sheer Systems. Having worked with Paul and his company,
firstly as a customer with a previous employer and also as an
associate. I can without doubt claim that his overall knowledge and
experience of his field in engineering is of the highest standard. His
particular knowledge of PLC Programming and Electronic Drives/ Motor
controllers for many different platforms is indeed a very strong
reason, why potential customers should not hesitate in working with
Paul.
A particular example of a project where he excelled on was on a project
that contained a very complex and high speed multi-axis drives control
system, the drive parameterisation and coding to link with the PLC’s
was undergoing major re-development by the hardware supplier. The
application involved huge involvement with Paul’s overall drive control
capabilities a key aspect to its success. The structure and layout of
the PLC code was also very well prepared and presented to his client in
a way that made it easy to support and train controls, commissioning
engineers that would be working with the machinery.
His commitment and loyalty to any particular project that he works with
is unquestionable. I would certainly have no hesitation in working with
Paul in any project. In fact the more complex and advanced the project
or application is, the more likely I would approach Paul to enquire
about his availability. I have no doubt that I will be working with
Paul again in the future and I look forward to it.
